Cycropia Aerial Dance will again dance below

for the debut of their show "Elements". Performances

just 2 blocks off Williamson Street on Madison’s east
side. Both performances begin at 8:30 pm and are free and
open to the public. A rain date is set for Sunday August
24 at 6:30pm in the case of a double cancellation only.
Seating is first come, first served, so come early to stake
out your spot!
Cycropia brings their astonishing blend of
suspended dance and acrobatics to the 35th annual Orton
Park Festival for the sixth year. Amidst the hum of cicadas
and festival-goers, the huge oak tree will be illuminated
against the darkening summer sky and transformed into a
stage for aerial dance. This year's show will feature double
trapeze, harness, hoop, steel trapezoid, handloop and, as
always, whimsical and beautiful choreography, dancing, costumes
and music!
One of only a handful of aerial dance troupes in the country,
Cycropia Aerial Dance was born in Madison in 1989 and has
been performing publicly since 1991. Using the single point
shoulder-height trapeze rigging style typically used in
aerial dance, Cycropia's performances create the breathtaking
illusion of human flight. Volunteer-run and collectivist
in structure, the troupe not only performs live, but conducts
trapeze classes for children and adults, as well as educational
workshops. Recent appearances include Madison Dance Festival
at the Mitby Theatre (February 2003), Orton Park Festival
(2002), and First Nite in Rockford, Illinois (2001). In
fall of 2001, Cycropia hosted the Madison Improvisational
Dance Festival, a four-day event featuring guest artists,
low-cost workshops and site-specific performances aimed
at community participation.
Cycropia’s appearance is funded in part by the Marquette
Neighborhood Association and by a grant from the Dane County
Cultural Affairs Commission.
