PRESS RELEASE
CYCROPIA AERIAL DANCE
presents
“Firefly”
at
The Orton Park Festival
August 23 & 24, 2002
8:30pm
Admission is free
Cycropia Aerial Dance will again dance
below the boughs of a majestic oak tree at Orton
Park Festival for the debut of their show "Firefly".
Performances are Friday August 23 and Saturday August 24
at Orton Park, just 2 blocks off Williamson
Street on Madison’s east side. Both performances begin
at 8:30 pm and are free and open to the public. A rain date
is set for Sunday August 25 at 6:30pm in the case of a double
cancellation only. Seating is first come, first served,
so come early to stake out your spot!
Fresh from their hugely successful May show “Alchemy”
at the Wisconsin Union Theater, Cycropia
brings their astonishing blend of suspended dance and acrobatics
to the 34th annual Orton Park Festival
for the fifth year. Amidst the hum of cicadas and festival-goers,
the huge oak tree will be illuminated against the darkening
summer sky and transformed into a stage for aerial dance.
The works to be presented include old and new. Several pieces
from “Alchemy” will be recreated
in the park setting. One new premiering work features students
from Cycropia’s adult trapeze class.
One of only a handful of aerial dance troupes in the country,
Cycropia Aerial Dance was born in Madison
in 1989 and has been performing publicly since 1991. Using
the single point shoulder-height trapeze rigging style typically
used in aerial dance, Cycropia's performances
create the breathtaking illusion of human flight. Volunteer-run
and collectivist in structure, the troupe not only performs
live, but conducts trapeze classes for children and adults,
as well as educational workshops. Recent appearances also
include First Nite in Rockford, Illinois
(2001), Fiesta Hispana (2001), and Ballet
Madison’s “Performing Artist’s
Spotlight” (2000). In fall of 2001, Cycropia
hosted the Madison Improvisational Dance Festival,
a four-day event featuring guest artists, low-cost workshops
and site-specific performances aimed at community participation.
Cycropia’s appearance is funded
in part by a grant from the Dane County Cultural Affairs
Commission with additional funds from the Madison Community
Foundation, the Overture Foundation, and Pleasant T. Rowland
Foundation.
