| Improvisation
at the Lighthouse Theater by Marcia Miquelon |
Theater specifications can vary tremendously. In general, we need at least a 35 foot wide x 20 foot deep stage with a fly loft, but we have performed in studio theaters without fly lofts. We prefer to do our own rigging, this way our technical staff can ensure safety. However, we will perform in union houses provided our riggers can work side-by-side with theater staff and perform safety checks. The reason behind these precautions is that we and other aerial dance companies have run into time delays, rigging that had to be re-done and equipment failures when people inexperienced with trapeze dance rigged aerial apparatuses. The best method for hanging trapezes is flying antenna trusses then cabling the trusses to the grid to stabilize their movement. Each space is unique and our riggers would be happy to address any questions or concerns. If your theater is in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan or Minnesota, one of our riggers may wish to visit your theater and assess it ahead of time. If your theater is in another state or outside the United States, please send information on your theater including general theater dimensions, layout, seating, costs, policies and procedures, light plot and available pipes for hanging aerial apparatuses or give us the address of your theater web site.

Our favorite trees are large oak trees with a wide span of thick branches. In order to do a full scale production, we need three or more healthy thick tree limbs growing nearly perpendicular to the tree trunk. One large oak or two side-by-side is ideal. The wide span, thick branches and perpendicular growth allows for a full range of motion with the trapezes. However, we have done site specific installations in trees with fewer than three branches or with upward sloped branches. In these instances, we use a smaller range of motion, mainly spinning in one place and ascending and descending the rope. If you think you have a possible site for a tree show in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan or Minnesota, one of our riggers may wish to visit the site to assess it ahead of time. If your site is in another state or outside the United States, we may ask you to take photographs and measurements of the site.

We have performed lecture demonstrations and have had artist-in-residence
programs at elementary and high schools. Two of our members taught
an aerial dance workshop for dance majors at the University of
Michigan. Gymnasiums with open web joist ceilings are a great
space to fly in, provided that there is at least a 40 x 40 foot
open space with 15 foot ceilings. However, a larger gymnasium
with up to 20 + foot ceilings is ideal. Our first rehearsal and
performance space, Turner Hall, was a gymnasium with huge curved
wooden beams. Many large dance studios are also a possibility,
depending on the type of ceiling. Often we are able to move drop
ceiling tiles aside and rig from the structural steel above the
drop ceiling. If you would like a lecture demonstration or artist
in residency program and your school or university is in Wisconsin,
Illinois, Iowa, Michigan or Minnesota, one of our riggers may
wish to visit the site to assess it ahead of time. If your school
or university is in another state or outside the United States,
the first step would be to provide us with the dimensions and
layout of the space and type of ceiling.
