Cycropia has functioned as a collective since its founding in
1989 and has 501(c)(3) non-profit status. We meet monthly
to make group decisions and have yearly or bi-yearly planning
retreats. The majority of our decisions are made by consensus
and together we plan our artistic season.
Our group is made up of dancers with a variety of backgrounds
and professions. We all lend our skills to producing performances
and running the collective. We are carpenters, engineers, visual
artists, tailors, arts managers, grant writers, social workers,
web designers, musicians and teachers. Members volunteer for the
positions of Artistic Director, Technical Director, Riggers, Treasurer
and Costume Designers based on their experience and inclinations.
At each monthly meeting before a show, the directors present
and update task lists. Dates and times are scheduled for loading
out/loading in equipment, rigging, technical rehearsals and strike.
Other members take on specific performance-related duties such
as designing posters, programs and fliers, booking theaters and
outdoor performances, or coordinating stage crew and ushers.
Part of the beauty of our collective is that any member is welcome
to choreograph a piece. Choreographers choose their own dancers
and are allotted rehearsal time. Experienced choreographers offer
new choreographers feedback and support. A structured collective
audition process is in place. This process may be bypassed if
the group decides to give control to a particular artistic director.
We are a close-knit, hard-working community of artists. We depend
on each other for support and concrete assistance. Together, we
strive to fulfill all of our members' artistic visions, performance
aspirations and dreams.
